A quiet bach at the eastern end of Otama Beach

Otama Beachfront is a three-level bach at the eastern end of Otama Beach, looking out over pōhutukawa to the sea and the Mercury Islands. A private access path takes you down to the sand in a minute or two.

The beach is long and golden, and often close to empty. Guests swim, bodyboard and walk it end to end, and some fish for snapper off the beach on the evening tide. It's a lightly built stretch of coast, and you may spot tūturuwhatu, the New Zealand dotterel.

Inside, it's a homely, light-filled bach full of character: cushioned window seats with sea views, shelves of books and a well-equipped kitchen. At night you hear the waves, and guests say the stars from the main bedroom balcony are like nothing they've seen.

A beautiful, quiet spot. Ocean views and close enough to hear the waves. Few houses in the area as it is reserved for the manu including tuturuwhatu which we got to see. The house had everything we needed, full kitchen, great shower. Plenty to read. We even found a dedicated board to do our jigsaw puzzles on. Wonderful.

A wonderful place to stay on a beautiful beach. The house had a well equipped kitchen & loved the window seats for reading & looking at the view. Serena, our host, was welcoming and organised and checked in that everything was working well. Thank you

The house is set in the most beautiful setting looking down on a gorgeous golden/white sandy beach.
Even though we were unfortunate with the wet, grey two days, being able to sit on the window seats and see the stunning view was so relaxing.
The house is very comfortable, along with the beds and there is a massive book collection!
Definitely a lovely place to stay in.

The views and direct access to the best end of beautiful Otama beach are what sets this place apart - just stunning. The bach itself is clean, comfortable and well-appointed - no complaints. The kitchen is well-stocked, the beds are comfy, and there are books galore if you want something to read on the beach. But drifting off to the sound of the ocean each night and waking to that phenomenal view each morning made it extra special. It's a perfect spot for a quiet few days away from the city. We will definitely stay again - hopefully many more times.

Good to know

What happens after I book?

Whichever site you book through, we then send you a link to our guest portal. That's where you complete a short check-in form and get the door code and house guide, and where a refundable NZ$250 security deposit is taken as a hold on your card before check-in. It's a separate step from Airbnb or Booking.com, so it's worth doing before you set off.

Are there insect screens?

No. On summer evenings mosquitoes can come in, so we suggest closing up the house around dusk and bringing insect repellent.

Can we bring children?

We recommend the house for guests aged 12 and over, because of its stairs and large glass areas.

Can we bring our dog?

Sorry, no pets.

Is there a TV?

Yes: a 42-inch TV with live, on-demand and streaming services, and Starlink wi-fi. Plenty of guests spend their evenings with the books and the view instead.

What about shopping and supplies?

Otama is quiet and lightly built, so stock up before you arrive. There's a café and restaurant a short drive away in Kuaotunu.
